The Full Frame Documentary Film Festival is an annual Durham event that will take place on April 7 through 10 in 2016. This four-day international festival features nearly 100 documentary films, along with the directors, producers, and subjects who take part in making them.
Each year the film lineup includes world and US premieres and Academy Award contenders as well as films that may have limited distribution. In addition to film screenings, fans can take part in Q and A’s, an awards barbecue, and discussions about the state of documentary filmmaking.
The Full Frame organization also presents free documentary screenings throughout the year. Tickets go on sale beginning April 1, 2016.
Full Frame’s Film Schedule will be available on their website in mid-March. The first show starts at 10 am daily and the last show starts around 10 pm. Films are only scheduled once during the festival. However, a handful of
films (mostly festival award winners) will have an encore screening on
Sunday afternoon.
They encourage you to arrive with plenty of time to park, obtain your
ticket(s), and arrive at your venue 30 minutes prior to showtime. If you
have a ticket, you must be in line 30 minutes prior to showtime. If you
arrive after seating has concluded, your ticket no longer guarantees a
seat. All unclaimed seats will be filled by the Last Minute Line.
Frame’s official parties, the Opening Night Party and Awards Barbecue,
are ticketed events and sell out early. Be sure to get your tickets if
you plan to attend. Downtown Durham has many restaurants and bars within a short walking distance from the festival.
Durham-based filmmaker Rex Miller explores the life of trailblazing
tennis player Althea Gibson, the first African-American athlete to cross
the color lines of an elite sport and compete for the U.S. Nationals
(the precursors of the U.S. Open). This is Althea Gibson’s documentary. She was the queen of the highly segregated tennis world in the 1950s.
Archival materials and interviews
shed light on a tough, talented young woman whose gifts drew people of
influence to support her rise as a star on the world stage. Full Frame
alum Elisabeth Haviland James produced and edited the film, which
screened at the festival in April of 2015. Full Frame alum and founder Nancy
Buirski also served in a producing role.
